Mission and Guidelines

Mission

The Wellington Management Foundation's mission is to support programs and organizations in our communities which improve the education and educational opportunities of economically disadvantaged youth.

Grantmaking Guidelines

What do we fund?

We fund programs that provide economically disadvantaged youth in our communities with access to high quality academic education. We believe a strong academic foundation can have a clear and positive impact on the lives of young people. Accordingly, the Foundation aims to select programs with a clear and central academic focus.

  • While some of these programs may include career or life skills components and we recognize how these further enhance young people's chances for success, the primary goal of the Foundation is to support academic education.
  • Programs that teach arts or sports must simultaneously have a strong academic component.
  • The Foundation is most interested in supporting programs that provide direct educational services to youth. We are open to funding a small number of teacher training programs, as we know well prepared professionals greatly affects students' success. However, we will not fund organizations that only provide educational materials.
  • Grantee organizations may use our funding as they see fit, either for programmatic or operating expenses. Scholarship programs, however, are not eligible for funding.

Whom do we fund?

We fund organizations that support economically disadvantaged youth in our communities. We recognize that economic privilege greatly increases educational opportunities. Therefore, our goal is to provide economically disadvantaged youth in our communities with educational experiences that will enhance their chances for future success.

  • Eligible organizations must be within 30 miles of one of our US or UK offices and approximately 70% of participants must be economically disadvantaged and under the age of 21.
  • We fund organizations of various sizes. We are interested in supporting organizations where our grants have a meaningful impact on youth.
  • We fund newer as well as more established organizations. We do prefer to fund organizations that can demonstrate the strength of their management and that have a measurable track record of success.
  • We fund religiously affiliated organizations that are inclusive of all participants regardless of religious background and beliefs.
  • In 2009 we funded 32 organizations with grants ranging in size from $10,000 to $35,000.
